Buttervilla Farm
Buttervilla Farm nestles in a beautiful valley a mile from St Germans and just two miles from the South Cornwall coast.
robert hockingSituated on the historic Port Eliot estate which Napoleon, gazing at Port Eliot land from the sea as he sailed into exile, said was the most beautiful place in England. Heritage tomatoes, fruits and herbs are grown here by Robert & Gill Hocking. Robert (Mr Fruit) has been growing organically for more than thirty years, originally to sustain a self sufficient lifestyle - rearing rare breed cattle, sheep, chickens, geese and growing enough vegetables and fruit to provide fantastic tasting and healthy meals for his family. The animals, apart from the chickens, have gone, along with most of the children. The farmhouse has been converted into a funky B&B and the 15 acres are used to grow 14 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes, gariguette & mara des bois strawberries along with a range of raspberries and herbs.

Keveral Farm
Keveral Farm sits high above the South Cornishl coast near Seaton, around five miles from the fishing port of Looe. It has supported a seancommunity of organic growers since the early seventies, becoming one of the first Soil Association organically certified farms. The produce is packed at Keveral where Sean O'Neill (Mr Leaves) lives. The packing barn sits in the middle of the action on the farm, surrounded by the apple press, chickens and a range of other buildings, for which the community have big plans. Down a short and winding lane a series of poly tunnels huddle together where Sean grows some very fine micro leaf and a bunch of other very beautiful things. Sean was a successful musician, until the punishing lifestyle and three beautiful daughters drew him away from the bright lights to Keveral, where he has lived for 9 years. He just loves to seduce your tastebuds - chefs will testify that he really has developed special skills that pushes the boundaries of taste.

Skye Grove
Skye Grove located on high ground near Liskeard is farmed by Brian Cavendish and Kevin Austin. Brian a brian cavendishvegetable grower with an ambition to evolve a system using working horses in horticulture that is practical, economical and sustainable. He has many years experience working as a biodynamic farmer and gardener. Kevin is a horticulturalist and the outside crop manager at the Eden Project. He is very interested in developing the production of seasonal and alternative crops for our Cornish climate. Having farmed for many years he is now keen to set up organic fruit and vegetable production systems that builds bio diversity and that are truly sustainable. Skye Grove produces much of the field crops such as carrots, kale, onions and chard using biodynamic methods. Its a lot more exposed than the other locations so the crops tend to come later, the land is in full production in late summer and autumn. Bill and Ben are a pair of Comtois draft horses who do all the hard work and without a doubt help to make Skye Grove a truly sustainable environment.

Port Eliot Festival:
A flower show out of left field
From the Telegraph Aug 2010

Port Eliot's inaugural Flower Show, almost certainly a first for any British arts festival, promised not to conform to the usual etiquettes, nor to stick to the standard rules.

There were many other things to entertain the flower-show audience. On the awards podium, which doubled as a stage, Port Eliot based Buttervilla Funky Leaves (which provides organic salads to Jamie Oliver's restaurant Fifteen Cornwall) did a foodie demonstration using musk mallow, hollyhocks and tree spinach among a selection of edible plants.

"I've never tasted anything like it in my life," confessed a member of the audience as he nibbled on a leaf from a Paraguay sugar plant which, we learned, is 300 times stronger than sugar - with no calories.

15 studentsButtervilla and Fifteen Cornwall
The student chefs from Fifteen Cornwall regularly visit the Buttervilla, Keveral and Skye Grove farms. They learn a little about how we grow our sensational fruit and vegetables then harvest ingredients for a slap up al fresco lunch. The highlight for most is having a go at ploughing behind the Comtois draught horses that are used at Skygrove.

Buttervilla's Growers have been supplying produce to Fifteen since the day they opened, our heritage tomatoes have been a real hit with the chefs and diners, we have also supplied much of the seasonal produce on offer at the restaurant.
